For the science project, our group has chosen very special insects.

How Many Ants Are on Earth?

지구상에는 얼마나 많은 개미가 있을까?

 

We often see ants come out of nowhere.

우리는 종종 난데없이 나타나는 개미들을 본다.

 

Like humans, they live almost everywhere in the world, except a few extremely cold places including Antarctica.

인간처럼, 개미도 남극을 포함한 일부 극도로 추운 곳을 제외한 전 세계 거의 모든 곳에 살고 있다.

 

As of 2018, there were over 7 billion people on Earth.

2018년, 지구상에 70억이 넘는 인구가 있었다.

According to scientists, there are about one million ants for every human in the world.

과학자들에 의하면, 세상에는 사람 한 명당 약 백만 마리의 개미가 있다.

 

Though each ant hardly weighs anything, one million ants are as heavy as a human being weighing about 62 kilograms.

개미 한 마리는 거의 무게가 나가지 않지만, 백만 마리의 개미는 체중이 약 62kg인 사람 한 명과 무게가 같다.

 

What Is the Ant Society Like?

개미 사회는 어떠할까?

 

Ants live in colonies which have lots of residents living together.

개미는 많은 거주자가 함께 사는 군집을 이루어 산다.

 

Within a colony, there are usually three different types of ants.

군집 안에는 보통 세 가지 다른 종류의 개미가 있다.

 

There is the queen, and what she does her entire life is lay eggs.

여왕개미가 있고, 그녀가 평생 하는 일은 알을 낳는 것이다.

 

The second type of ant is the male that helps the queen produce these eggs.

두 번째 종류는 여왕이 알을 낳는 것을 돕는 수개미이다.

 

The third type of ant is the worker.

세 번째 종류는 일개미이다.

 

Worker ants are all female and do very important jobs, like caring for eggs, defending the colony, and collecting food.

일개미는 모두 암컷인데, 알을 돌보고, 군집을 방어하며, 먹이를 모으는 것과 같은 매우 중요한 일을 한다.

 

How Do Ants Communicate?

개미는 어떻게 의사소통할까?

 

 Though ants do not speak like humans, they actually have a “language.”

개미들이 인간처럼 말을 하는 것은 아니지만, 그들은 실제로 ‘언어’를 가지고 있다.

 

Ants produce a chemical called a pheromone to communicate with one another.

개미는 서로 소통하기 위해 ‘페로몬’이라고 불리는 화학물질을 분비한다. 

 

By using the chemical, they can exchange information about food or danger.

그 화학물질을 사용하여 그들은 먹이나 위험에 관한 정보를 교환할 수 있다.

 

Ants also use touch for communication.

개미는 또한 의사소통을 위해 접촉을 이용한다.

For example, if an ant finds food, it passes on the good news by rubbing its body on its neighbor.

예를 들어, 먹이를 발견할 경우 개미는 자기 몸을 이웃의 개미에게 문질러서 좋은 소식을 전달한다.

 

Since an ant has legs covered with very sensitive hairs, it can sense even the smallest touch.

개미는 (자극에) 매우 민감한 털로 덮인 다리가 있기 때문에, 아주 미세한 접촉도 감지할 수 있다.
