“Dig harder, Stanley! “

더 열심히 파,

 

Stanley! The harder you dig, the faster you’ll finish!” yelled Mr. Sir.

네가 열심히 파면 팔수록, 너는 더 빨리 끝낼 거야!” Sir 씨가 소리를 질렀다.

 

Stanley Yelnats couldn’t dig any harder since every single muscle hurt.

Stanley Yelnats는 모든 근육 하나하나가 아팠기 때문에 더 열심히 팔 수가 없었다.

 

He was thirsty and hungry.

그는 목이 마르고 배가 고팠다.

 

He wanted to go home.

그는 집에 가고 싶었다.

 

Unfortunately, Stanley’s home for the next 18 months would be right here, at Camp Green Lake.

불행히도, 앞으로 18개월 동안 Stanley의 집은 바로 여기 그린레이크 캠프가 될 것이었다.

 

Camp Green Lake was a terrible name.

그린레이크 캠프는 형편없는 이름이었다.

 

It wasn’t green and there was no lake.

Camp Green Lake was hot and full of sand.

Then what was a good boy like Stanley doing here?

그렇다면 Stanley 같이 착한 소년이 여기서 무엇을 하고 있었을까?

 

He was sent to the camp for stealing a pair of sneakers.

그는 운동화 한 켤레를 훔쳤다는 이유로 그 캠프에 보내졌다.

 

Stanley didn’t really steal a pair of sneakers.

Stanley가 정말로 운동화 한 켤레를 훔친 것은 아니었다.

 

He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

그는 그저 잘못된 시간에 잘못된 장소에 있었을 뿐이었다.

 

One day, he was walking home from school.

어느 날, 그는 학교에서 집으로 걸어가고 있었다.

 

Suddenly, a pair of old sneakers fell from the sky.

갑자기, 낡은 운동화 한 켤레가 하늘에서 떨어졌다.

 

The sneakers hit him on the head.

그 운동화는 그의 머리에 맞았다.

 

 

He started running with the sneakers to tell his father what happened.

그는 그의 아버지에게 무슨 일이 일어났는지 말하려고 운동화를 가지고 달리기 시작했다.

 

A few minutes later, the police stopped Stanley and asked him why he was running.

몇 분 후에, 경찰이 Stanley를 멈춰 세웠고 그가 왜 달리고 있었는지를 그에게 물었다.

 

Unfortunately for Stanley, the sneakers belonged to a famous baseball player, Clyde Livingstone.

That was why Stanley ended up at Camp Green Lake.

Stanley was assigned to Group D in the camp.

There were six other boys in Stanley’s group.

They all had cool names like X-Ray, Zigzag and Zero.

그들은 모두 X-Ray, Zigzag, Zero와 같은 멋진 이름을 가지고 있었다.

 

Each boy had to dig one hole every day.

각 소년은 매일 구덩이를 하나씩 파야 했다.

 

It had to be about 150cm deep and 150cm wide.

그것은 150cm 정도 깊이와 150cm 정도 너비여야 했다.

 

Mr. Sir said, “You are digging to build character.”

Sir 씨는 “너희들은 인격을 수양하기 위해 구덩이를 파고 있는 거야.”라고 말했다.

 

 

The more Stanley dug, the stronger he became.

Stanley는 많이 파면 팔수록, 더 힘이 세져 갔다.

 

It took less time to finish his hole each day.

하루하루 구덩이를 끝내는 데 시간이 덜 걸렸다.

 

In his second week, as Stanley was finishing his hole, he saw something shiny in the dirt.

그가 온 지 두 번째 주에, Stanley가 자기 구덩이를 끝내 가고 있었을 때, 그는 흙 속에서 빛나는 뭔가를 봤다.

 

Stanley’s heart beat faster.

Stanley의 심장은 더 빨리 뛰었다.

 

He heard that anyone who found something interesting would be given the day off.

그는 흥미로운 뭔가를 발견한 사람은 그 날을 쉬게 된다고 들었다.

 

He carefully picked up the shiny object and brushed off the dirt.

그는 조심스럽게 그 빛나는 물체를 집어 흙을 털어 냈다.

 

It was a small gold tube.

그것은 작은 금색 통이었다.

 

But it couldn’t be real gold since it was too light.

하지만 그것은 너무 가벼웠기 때문에 진짜 금일 리가 없었다.

 

There were two letters, KB, at the bottom of the tube.

그 통의 바닥에는 KB라는 두 글자가 있었다.

 

What did KB stand for? KB는

무엇을 의미했을까?

 

Stanley’s heart beat even faster.

Stanley의 심장은 훨씬 더 빨리 뛰었다.
